The Coach Mpilo and MINA programme is designed to bridge the gap in men’s access to HIV treatment and care. By pairing men with trained male peers—referred to as “coaches”—the programme provides crucial guidance and encouragement. These coaches support men from diagnosis through treatment, addressing barriers such as stigma, access challenges, and adherence issues. The programme creates a non-judgmental and supportive environment that empowers men to navigate their HIV treatment journey with confidence.
Rationale
Men are statistically less likely than women to seek HIV testing or adhere to treatment, resulting in lower viral suppression rates. Coach Mpilo and MINA tackles these challenges head-on by offering relatable, peer-led support. Male coaches, who have lived experience with HIV, share their personal journeys, offering continuous encouragement while countering stigma and fostering open dialogue about HIV.
Objectives
- Increase Treatment and Viral Suppression: By September 2025, the programme aims to increase the percentage of HIV-positive men linked to ART and achieving viral suppression to 95%.
- Reduce Stigma and Build Confidence: Help men feel empowered to live openly with HIV through peer support.
- Holistic Health Focus: Engage men in overall health and wellness practices, beyond just HIV care.
How It Works
Each participant in the programme is paired with a trained male coach who has personal experience with HIV. This creates a trusted, relatable source of support. Coaches provide one-on-one guidance, both in community-based and facility settings, to encourage men to stay engaged in their care while promoting a positive, stigma-free outlook.
Impact Since 2020
Launched in the Tshwane District with 25 male coaches, the Coach Mpilo programme has successfully reached men in hard-to-access areas, including hostels, factories, and transport hubs. The community-centered approach has led to increased HIV testing, ART linkage, and improved retention in HIV care, demonstrating the transformative power of peer-led support in improving health outcomes.
