Wits RHI’s Impact at Faculty of Health Sciences Research Day 2024
On 5 September 2024, the Faculty of Health Sciences at Wits University held its annual Research Day, a significant event dedicated to exploring the theme, “Improving Healthcare through Research and Innovation. The day’s activities took place across the Wits School of Public Health and the Medical School.
The plenary session, held in the School of Public Health auditorium, featured two distinguished speakers, including Professor Helen Rees, Executive Director of Wits RHI. Prof Rees’ presentation, titled “Thirty Years of Wits RHI: Research, Innovation, and Opportunity,” took the audience on a journey through the institute’s history. She highlighted the key factors that shaped Wits RHI’s success, such as the research opportunities that arose in the early years, the institute’s response to the HIV epidemic, and the ability to capitalize on ‘unusual opportunities’ that arose along the way. Prof Rees emphasised the importance of timing, effort, and perseverance, sharing lessons learned from both triumphs and challenges. She also discussed Wits RHI’s approach to pandemics and how the institute is preparing for future public health challenges.
In addition to the plenary, Wits RHI played an active role throughout the day. Professor Sinead Delany-Moretlwe, Director of Research at Wits RHI, participated in a roundtable discussion on “Innovation in Action: Bridging the Gap and Translating Healthcare Research into Practice” at the Medical School. This session aimed to highlight the practical application of cutting-edge research in healthcare.
Wits RHI also had an exhibition stand at the Medical School, providing students, graduates, and researchers with an opportunity to engage with ongoing research projects. This exhibition facilitated stronger collaborations and knowledge-sharing among research entities and individuals within the health sciences faculty. Research Day 2024 showcased the transformative power of research and innovation in improving healthcare outcomes. Wits RHI’s contributions reinforced its position as a leader in health research, driving progress in the fight against global health challenges.
