From Stigma to Solutions: Advances in the Prevention of HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections
9 September 2024
Join us for an enlightening lecture by Professor Sinead Delany-Moretlwe of Wits RHI, Faculty of Health Sciences. Discover the urgent need for effective interventions in the fight against HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly in Africa. In this lecture, Professor Delany-Moretlwe will delve into the significant impact of HIV and STIs on the continent, highlighting biomedical advances such as PrEP and vaccines. She will also emphasise the importance of integrating user and health system perspectives to create impactful public health solutions.
Event Details:
Date: Monday, 9 September 2024
Time: 17:00
Venue: Marie Curie Lecture Theatre, Wits Medical School, Parktown
Key Facts:
In Africa, one in every 30 adults is living with HIV, and over 3000 adolescent girls and young women acquire HIV infection every week. Nineteen out of the top 20 countries with the highest burden of cervical cancer are in eastern and southern Africa, and women living with HIV have a six-fold higher risk of developing cervical cancer. More than one million curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are acquired every day worldwide, with the highest burden in Africa and among women.
There is a huge unmet need for the development of effective interventions to prevent HIV and other STIs, particularly for use in resource-constrained settings. Professor Delany-Moretlwe will reflect biomedical advances in HIV and STI prevention, like PrEP and vaccines, and the importance of incorporating user and health system perspectives into the design of new interventions in order to achieve scale and public health impact.
