Dr John Imrie is the Director of Health Programmes at Wits RHI. He holds an MA in South African Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, a Postgraduate Diploma and MSc in Health Promotion and Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and a PhD in HIV Prevention from the University College London. He is a senior programme implementation specialist and public health researcher with more than 30 years of international experience working in Canada, the UK, South Africa, Australia, and the South Pacific. His research interests are across the broad fields of sexual health, HIV, health promotion science and health systems strengthening.
Dr Imrie is recognised internationally for his research in HIV prevention, sexual health, health promotion and health services development, specifically with adolescent girls and young women, in-school and out-of-school youth. He is the principal investigator on Wits RHI’s PEPFAR-funded Operation Gophelega – a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) District Support Partnership that supports two metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng, South Africa: Tshwane and Ekurhuleni. Dr Imrie is also interested in the issues of aging populations and support for life-long HIV treatment in the South African context and is developing a portfolio of work in this area.
