BIYELA STUDY
BIYELA: Bexsero Immunisation in Young Women in Africa. The BIYELA Study is a Phase 3 randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of the meningococcal serogroup B vaccine rMenB+OMV NZ (Bexsero) in preventing gonococcal infection among individuals born female in South Africa. This study focuses on sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, with the primary goal of determining whether the Bexsero vaccine can effectively prevent cervical and/or anorectal gonococcal infections.
Study Objectives
The primary objective of the BIYELA Study is to assess whether the Bexsero vaccine, that is used for preventing meningococcal meningitis, can also play a role in preventing gonorrhea, a common STI that can lead to severe health complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), chronic pelvic pain, pregnancy complications and increase risk of HIV. The study will gather critical data on the vaccine’s efficacy and safety in this context, providing insights that could significantly impact STI prevention strategies in South Africa and globally.
