D43 Wits-UNC Partnership: Expanding Capacity in HIV Implementation Science in South Africa
Rationale
Despite significant progress in expanding antiretroviral therapy (ART) and HIV prevention like PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis), South Africa (SA) remains a focal point of the global HIV epidemic. While there have been reductions in HIV incidence and mortality, challenges persist in effectively implementing HIV prevention and care, posing a major obstacle to achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 goals. High-burden countries such as SA must discover more efficient methods to enhance program accessibility and performance, particularly among key populations. Implementation Science (IS) strategies play a crucial role in identifying obstacles and enablers within interventions, enabling evidence-based adjustments to enhance implementation and outcomes. Therefore, investing in IS research and building research capacity is essential for optimizing HIV and TB prevention and control strategies in South Africa
